It’s no surprise that we love Ape Labs lights. It’s also not surprising that we get pretty excited when a new version of one of our favorite lights is released. The Ape Labs Coin is one of those lights, and today we’re talking about version 2.0. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out our original version 1.0 review of the Coin by clicking here. But today we’re going to do an Ape Labs Coin 2.0 review, including a direct comparison of this new, upgraded version to the original release.

Ape Labs Coin 2.0 review – A quick refresher

If you’ve never checked out the Ape Labs Coin before, here’s the low down. If you’re familiar with the Ape Labs Can, think of the Coin as the same light – but without the can. It’s also lacking the battery that makes the Can physically larger. But with that reduced size comes an insanely compact and portable wash light. We’d go as far as to say the smallest wash light on the market right now.

However, inside the Ape Labs Coin is the same bright LED diode found in many other Ape Labs products. Despite it’s small size, it has a fantastic output that makes you question how it’s even possible. Oh, and did we mention that it’s made of aircraft-grade aluminum? Because it is. On top of the light is a wide 75-degree fresnel lens. Whether you’re pointing it up a wall, shining it on an object in the room, or aiming it down from above, it can blend in almost anywhere.

With its super small size, there are a LOT of applications for the Coin 2.0. It can fit in all sorts of places where a can might not squeeze in. For example, the Ape Labs Coin 2.0 is perfect for lighting trussing from within. Where a can may start the light beam higher up the truss, the Coin can light virtually the entire length of truss due to its short stature.

Ape Labs Coin 2.0 review – comparison with V1.0

ape labs coin 2.0 reviewHolding the Ape Labs Coin 2.0 and 1.0 side by side it’s tough to tell them apart. The 2.0 appears more minimalistic, with an all-metal housing and a small laser-engraved logo. The 1.0, on the other hand, has a white label circling the housing.

What really sets the 2.0 apart, however, is the LED. Not only is it brighter, but Ape Labs have added an amber LED to the mix. This opens up a whole new world of color combinations to users. In our video review, the difference is evident right from color macro 1, where the V1.0 cool white is swapped for a warm white in V2.0. As we cycled through the other macros, colors seemed to pop more than V1.0. Additionally, version 1.0 ran out of color macros at #20. The Ape Labs Coin 2.0, however, just kept going all the way up to 29.

Oh, and one quick tip for those of you that pick up some Ape Labs Coins. When using them against a wall, make sure to pull them a few inches away. In our testing, we felt that it increased the intensity of the beam noticeably.

Wrapping up

We hope you’ve enjoyed this quick Ape Labs Coin 2.0 review and comparison! While the updates are subtle, we believe they make a great light even better. For an even more in-depth look at the Coin, be sure to check out our original V1.0 video.
